The who’s who of the transport transition met at polisMOBILITY 2024

From 22 to 25 May 2024, Cologne was once again transformed into a pivotal gathering for the debate on the transport transition in Germany. A diverse line-up of events were hosted under the banner of polisMOBILITY. They addressed the future of urban mobility with an integrated approach, bringing stakeholders from the private and public sectors together with civil society. The polisMOBILITY expo & conference on 22 and 23 May further consolidated its position as a crucial dialogue platform for the transport transition. Around 150 exhibitors and partners and some 200 experts demonstrated how the city of tomorrow can be designed on a human scale with sustainability front of mind. The polisMOBILITY camp, hosted in Cologne’s city centre on 24 and 25 May, provided a lively forum for a citizens’ dialogue, information sharing, exchanges of ideas and creativity. Around 14,000 visitors attended polisMOBILITY and its partner events to find out about the topics presented.The transport transition is set to play a crucial role in tackling global challenges such as the climate crisis and urbanisation. But this shift can be achieved only with a united front – this was something all the participants at polisMOBILITY 2024 agreed on. “The transport transition is a task for all members of society and one that we will have to continue to tackle in future generations,” said Oliver Frese, Chief Operating Officer of Koelnmesse GmbH. “For the past three years, we’ve made a decisive contribution towards a successful transformation with polisMOBILITY. The event serves as a pivotal dialogue platform and has once again succeeded in bringing together pioneering thinkers from business, research, public policy and civil society together for a debate that is incredibly important.”
Around 14,000 visitors met in Cologne, demonstrating the public’s great interest in the urban mobility of the future. Policymakers at the state and federal levels also underscored the enormous political relevance of polisMOBILITY’s themes with their commitment to the event and their participation in its programme. Among them was Dr Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, who assumed the role of one of the event’s patrons for the first time. With his backing, the minister joined the patronages already secured from the Association of German Cities (Deutscher Städtetag) and the German Association of Towns and Municipalities (Deutscher Städte- und Gemeindebund). In addition, Mona Neubaur, Minister for Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Action and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, and Oliver Krischer, Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, attended the dialogue platform and actively engaged in the discussions at the event.
Conference provides powerful inspiration for the transport transition
The polisMOBILITY expo & conference focused on the municipal mobility transition, local public transport & mobility services, and urban drive systems & the energy transition. In stimulating talks, panel discussions and workshops, conference delegates looked beyond the challenges and also discussed tangible solutions. The spectrum of topics addressed ranged from urban and transport planning to shared mobility and urban logistics all the way through to the impact of artificial intelligence. The conference was opened by Friedemann Karig, author and journalist, who captivated the audience with his inspiring keynote “Talking about transformation”. Vanessa Cann, AI entrepreneur and member of the board of the German AI association, outlined how generative AI is changing how we live and work. Dr Meredith Glaser, CEO of the Urban Cycling Institute in the Netherlands, discussed the power of transformation and the enormous opportunities that the transport transition presents.
“With our programme, we’ve really done justice to the topic’s immense complexity and interdisciplinary scope,” said Professor Johannes Busmann, Managing Director of the publishing company Müller + Busmann GmbH & Co. KG, strategic partner of Koelnmesse, who oversaw the curation of the content for the conference programme. “Technological advances in digitalisation, artificial intelligence and energy-saving technologies are bringing mobility equity in the city within our reach. That makes it even more important for us to keep the conversation going and keep working on new solutions.”
Expo presents a living lab for the future of urban mobility
The event’s second main pillar was the expo. Covering everything from hydrogen-powered trucks to innovative charging infrastructure to new forms of shared mobility, the polisMOBILITY expo provided participants with a rare chance to see the next generation of mobility solutions for themselves. A number of companies, cities and local authorities presented their technologies and products in a showcase that featured established industry leaders alongside new market entrants. The exhibitors included names such as DACHSER, APCOA Germany, Fifteen, Kienzler Stadtmobiliar and the Plattform Shared Mobility. Major institutions were also in attendance at this year’s event, with the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), the Association for Pedestrian- and Bicycle-friendly Cities, Townships & Districts in North Rhine-Westphalia (AGFS NRW), and the German Federal Association for eMobility (BEM) represented at stands. In addition, an interactive test area enabled visitors to test selected innovations and vehicles first-hand.
With the startupHUB, polisMOBILITY once again provided start-ups with the perfect platform for showcasing their offerings. The startupHUB was complemented by the startupPITCH: After making it through a curated selection process into the final round, five start-ups were given the chance to present their visionary concepts and ideas for the mobility of tomorrow on the activeSTAGE. The winners to emerge from the contest were Senf.app, a digital platform for citizen participation, and namowo, a solution for sustainable mobility in housing developments. Alongside this, the newly launched Call for Best Practices enabled cities, local authorities and local authority-owned companies to present their pilot projects for promoting the municipal transport transition. Of the numerous submissions, around 30 were chosen to appear in the poster exhibition in the foyer of the openSTAGE. The teams behind 15 selected best practices were given the opportunity to present their ideas in short talks on the citySTAGE. They included projects by the City of Aachen, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the former federal capital Bonn, and the City of Leipzig. The City of Cologne presented the latest developments for sustainable mobility in Cologne at a partner stand with Stadtwerke Köln GmbH and the go.Rheinland special-purpose association.
In a further new addition, the organisers of polisMOBILITY made recruiting young talent part of the event’s concept for the first time this year: Across Germany, universities offering relevant courses were invited to attend, and excursions with tailored programmes were laid on for them. Among the higher education institutions represented at the event were Technische Universität Berlin (M.BA. Sustainable Mobility Management) and the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences (Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering).
Professional exchanges continued at partner events
For the third time, the Bike Sharing Europe Conference was hosted in Cologne on Wednesday, 22 May. On Thursday, 23 May, the AGFS NRW once again staged the AGFS Congress at polisMOBILITY. The congress was followed by a special highlight: the presentation of the 2024 German Cycling Award, a joint initiative by the BMDV and the AGFS NRW. The prizes went to the projects Smart, Connected and Green – Integrated Cycling Planning in Frankenberg (Infrastructure category), B+R Advice Point: Expert Support and Facilitation (Service & Communication category) and BiciBus Germany (Voluntary Sector category). The mouse from the popular German children’s cartoon Die Sendung mit der Maus (The Show with the Mouse) was named the Most Cycling-friendly Personality.
Lively citizens’ dialogue in the polisMOBILITY camp
The City of Cologne hosted the polisMOBILITY camp immediately after the polisMOBILITY expo & conference. Already in its third edition, the event brought experts’ visions, ideas and inspiration to life on the streets of Cologne Across a large area of the inner city, urban mobility once again took centre stage on 24 and 25 May 2024: Rudolfplatz was transformed into a colourful fairground for experiencing, understanding and shaping the mobility transition. Visitors were invited to come along and see for themselves – and to add their voice to the discussions.
Ascan Egerer, Deputy for Mobility of the City of Cologne, commented: “The essential ingredients for change are fun, curiosity, and an open and honest exchange of ideas. That’s also true for changes that concern mobility in our beautiful city, and that’s why we designed the polisMOBILITY camp around the topics in our Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan.”
How can we get about better in Cologne? The interactive exhibition took visitors on a journey to the year 2035 and presented the sustainable mobility plan at five stations. Hands-on activities, talks and a diverse programme on the stage with more than 30 speakers and artists made abstract topics accessible. A total of 13 Cologne initiatives and 16 exhibitors showcased their ideas for the future of mobility and human-scale urban neighbourhoods. At the city’s pavilion, staff from the Department of Mobility entered into a lively exchange of ideas with interested members of the public from Cologne and the surrounding region. A mobile bar, comfortable seating and live music created an enthralling, fun-filled atmosphere, brimming with enthusiasm.
In 2025, the polisMOBILITY expo & conference will be hosted again on the Koelnmesse trade fair grounds on 11 and 12 June.

Vom 22. bis 25. Mai 2024 verwandelte sich Köln erneut in den zentralen Treffpunkt des Verkehrswende-Diskurses in Deutschland. Unter dem Dach der polisMOBILITY fanden vielfältige Veranstaltungen statt, die sich ganzheitlich mit der Zukunft urbaner Mobilität befassten und Akteurinnen und Akteure aus Privatwirtschaft, öffentlicher Hand und Zivilgesellschaft zusammenbrachten. Die polisMOBILITY expo & conference am 22. und 23. Mai festigte einmal mehr ihre Position als unverzichtbare Dialogplattform für die Verkehrswende. Rund 150 Aussteller und Partner sowie etwa 200 Expertinnen und Experten zeigten auf, wie sich die Stadt von morgen lebenswert und nachhaltig gestalten lässt. Das polisMOBILITY camp am 24. und 25. Mai in der Kölner Innenstadt bot einen lebendigen Raum für Bürgerdialog, Informationen, Austausch und Kreativität. Rund 14.000 Besuchende informierten sich auf der polisMOBILITY und ihren Partnerveranstaltungen.Die Verkehrswende spielt eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Bewältigung globaler Herausforderungen wie der Klimakrise und der Urbanisierung. Nur im engen Schulterschluss kann sie Realität werden – darin waren sich alle Teilnehmenden der polisMOBILITY 2024 einig. „Die Verkehrswende ist eine gesamtgesellschaftliche Aufgabe, der wir uns auch für nachfolgende Generationen stellen müssen“, betont Oliver Frese, Geschäftsführer der Koelnmesse GmbH. „Mit der polisMOBILITY leisten wir seit drei Jahren einen wichtigen Beitrag, damit ihre Umsetzung gelingen kann. Als zentrale Dialogplattform ist es uns wieder gelungen, Vordenker aus Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft, Politik und der Zivilgesellschaft in einen Dialog zu bringen, der ungemein wichtig ist.“
Rund 14.000 Besuchende kamen nach Köln und demonstrierten das große gesellschaftliche Interesse an der urbanen Mobilität der Zukunft. Auch die Landes- und Bundespolitik unterstrich mit ihrem Engagement und ihrer Teilnahme an der polisMOBILITY die hohe politische Relevanz des Themas. So übernahm Dr. Volker Wissing, Bundesminister für Digitales und Verkehr, erstmals die Schirmherrschaft für die Veranstaltung. Er ergänzte damit die Schirmherrschaften des Deutschen Städtetages und Deutschen Städte- und Gemeindebundes. Zudem besuchten Mona Neubaur, Ministerin für Wirtschaft, Industrie, Klimaschutz und Energie des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen, sowie Oliver Krischer, Minister für Umwelt, Naturschutz und Verkehr des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen, die Dialogplattform und beteiligten sich vor Ort aktiv am Diskurs.
Starke Impulse für die Verkehrswende auf der Konferenz
Im Fokus der polisMOBILITY expo & conference standen die Themen kommunale Mobilitätswende, ÖPNV & Mobilitätsdienstleistungen sowie urbane Antriebs- und Energiewende. In spannenden Vorträgen, Panels und Workshops wurden auf der Konferenz nicht nur Herausforderungen, sondern auch konkrete Lösungsansätze diskutiert. Das thematische Spektrum reichte von Stadt- und Verkehrsplanung über Shared Mobility und Citylogistik bis hin zum Einfluss von Künstlicher Intelligenz. Eröffnet wurde die Konferenz durch Friedemann Karig, Autor und Journalist, der das Publikum mit seiner inspirierenden Keynote „Von der Wende erzählen“ begeisterte. Vanessa Cann, KI-Entrepreneurin und Vorstandsmitglied im Bundesverband Künstliche Intelligenz, zeigte auf, wie generative KI unser Leben und Arbeiten verändert. Dr. Meredith Glaser, CEO des Urban Cycling Institute aus den Niederlanden, richtete den Fokus auf die Kraft des Wandels und die enormen Chancen, die in der Verkehrswende liegen.
„Mit dem Programm haben wir es geschafft, der hohen Komplexität und Interdisziplinarität des Themas Rechnung zu tragen“, sagt Prof. Dr. Johannes Busmann, Geschäftsführer Verlag Müller + Busmann GmbH & Co. KG, strategischer Partner der Koelnmesse und verantwortlich für die inhaltliche Ausgestaltung des Konferenzprogramms. „Durch technologische Fortschritte in der Digitalisierung, Künstliche Intelligenz und Energiespeicherung rückt die mobilitätsgerechte Stadt in greifbare Nähe. Umso wichtiger ist es jetzt, im Dialog zu bleiben und kontinuierlich an neuen Lösungen zu arbeiten.“
Ausstellung als Reallabor für Zukunft der urbanen Mobilität
Den zweiten zentralen Pfeiler der Veranstaltung stellte die Ausstellung dar. Vom Wasserstoff-LKW über innovative Ladeinfrastruktur bis hin zu neuen Formen der Shared Mobility – die polisMOBILITY bot eine seltene Gelegenheit, direkten Einblick in die nächste Generation von Mobilitätslösungen zu erhalten. Mehrere Unternehmen, Städte und Kommunen zeigten ihre Technologien und Produkte, darunter etablierte Branchenführer ebenso wie neue Marktteilnehmer. Zu den ausstellenden Unternehmen zählten unter anderem DACHSER, APCOA Deutschland, Fifteen, Kienzler Stadtmobiliar und die Plattform Shared Mobility. Zudem waren mit dem Bundesministerium für Digitales und Verkehr (BMDV), der Arbeitsgemeinschaft fußgänger- und fahrradfreundlicher Städte, Gemeinden und Kreise in Nordrhein-Westfalen e. V. (AGFS NRW) und dem Bundesverband eMobilität e.V. (BEM) wieder wichtige Institutionen mit einem Stand vertreten. Ein interaktiver Testbereich ermöglichte den Besuchenden ferner, ausgewählte Innovationen und Fahrzeuge praxisnah zu testen.
Mit dem startupHUB bot die polisMOBILITY erneut eine ideale Plattform für Start-ups, um ihr Leistungsspektrum in Szene zu setzen. Ergänzt wurde das spezielle Angebot durch den startupPITCH: Nach einem kuratierten Auswahlprozess erhielten fünf Start-ups in der Endrunde die Chance, ihre visionären Konzepte und Ideen für die Mobilität von morgen auf der activeSTAGE zu zeigen. Als Gewinner gingen Senf.app, eine digitale Plattform zur Bürgerbeteiligung, und namowo, eine Lösung für nachhaltige Mobilität im Wohnungsbau, hervor. Daneben ermöglichte der neu geschaffene „Call for Best Practices“ Städten, Kommunen und kommunalen Unternehmen, eigene Modellprojekte im Bereich der kommunalen Verkehrswende vorzustellen. Von zahlreichen eingereichten Beiträgen kamen rund 30 Einsendungen in die Posterausstellung im Eingangsbereich der openSTAGE. 15 ausgewählte Best Practices bekamen die Gelegenheit, sich in Kurzvorträgen auf der citySTAGE zu präsentieren, darunter Projekte der Stadt Aachen, der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg, der Bundesstadt Bonn und der Stadt Leipzig. Die Stadt Köln präsentierte auf einem Partnerstand mit der Stadtwerke Köln GmbH und dem Zweckverband go.Rheinland die neuesten Entwicklungen für die nachhaltige Mobilität in Köln.
Darüber hinaus integrierte die polisMOBILITY in diesem Jahr erstmals das Thema Nachwuchsgewinnung in ihr Konzept: Bundesweit waren Universitäten mit relevanten Studiengängen eingeladen und profitierten von maßgeschneiderten Exkursionsprogrammen. Unter anderem waren die Technische Universität Berlin (M.BA. Sustainable Mobility Management) und die Hochschule RheinMain (Fachbereich Architektur und Bauingenieurwesen) vertreten.
Fachlicher Austausch auch auf Partnerveranstaltungen
Bereits zum dritten Mal fand am Mittwoch, 22. Mai, die Bike Sharing Europe Conference, die europäische Fachkonferenz zum Thema Bike Sharing, in Köln statt. Am Donnerstag, 23. Mai, richtete die AGFS NRW erneut den AGFS-Kongress im Rahmen der polisMOBILITY aus. Ein besonderes Highlight im Anschluss war die Verleihung des Deutschen Fahrradpreises 2024, eine gemeinsame Initiative des BMDV und der AGFS NRW. Prämiert wurden die Projekte „Smart, vernetzt und grün – integrierte Radverkehrsplanung in Frankenberg“ (Kategorie Infrastruktur), „Beratungsstelle B+R: fachliche Unterstützung und Prozessbegleitung“ (Kategorie Service & Kommunikation) und „BiciBus-Deutschland“ (Kategorie Ehrenamt). Die Maus, bekannt aus „die Sendung mit der Maus“, erhielt die Auszeichnung als „Fahrradfreundlichste Persönlichkeit“.
Lebhafter Bürgerdialog im polisMOBILITY camp
Die Stadt Köln veranstaltete das polisMOBILITY camp direkt im Anschluss an die polisMOBILITY expo & conference. Bereits zum dritten Mal brachte es die Visionen, Ideen und Impulse aus der Fachwelt direkt auf die Kölner Straßen. Dort stand am 24. und 25. Mai 2024 in diesem Jahr erneut die Kölner Mobilität im Fokus: Der Rudolfplatz verwandelte sich in einen bunten Jahrmarkt rund ums Erleben, Verstehen und Gestalten der Mobilitätswende. Die Besuchenden waren eingeladen, sich ein eigenes Bild zu machen - und im Dialog tatkräftig mitzumischen.
Ascan Egerer, Beigeordneter für Mobilität der Stadt Köln, betont: „Veränderungen erfordern Spaß, Neugier und einen offenen und ehrlichen Austausch. Das gilt auch für Veränderungen, die die Mobilität in unserer schönen Stadt betreffen. Deshalb haben wir das polisMOBILITY camp rund um die Themen unseres nachhaltigen Mobilitätsplans konzipiert.“
Wie kommen wir besser durch Köln? Die interaktive Ausstellung entführte die Besuchenden ins Jahr 2035 und präsentierte den nachhaltigen Mobilitätsplan an fünf Stationen. Durch Mitmachaktionen, Vorträge und ein vielfältiges Bühnenprogramm mit mehr als 30 Rednerinnen und Rednern sowie Künstlerinnen und Künstlern wurden abstrakte Themen greifbar. 13 Kölner Initiativen und 16 Aussteller zeigten ihre Ideen für die Zukunft der Mobilität und lebenswerte Stadtviertel. Am Stadt-Pavillon standen Mitarbeitende des Dezernats für Mobilität im angeregten Austausch mit interessierten Menschen aus Köln und der Umgebung. Eine mobile Bar, gemütliche Sitzgelegenheiten und Live-Musik schufen eine mitreißende Atmosphäre voller Spaß und Begeisterung.
2025 wird die polisMOBILITY expo & conference am 11. und 12. Juni erneut auf dem Gelände der Koelnmesse stattfinden.
