Wagramer Straße gets a cycle highway and street park
Wagramer Strasse in Vienna is being transformed. It is becoming greener, more liveable and more bicycle-friendly. Under the motto "Out of the asphalt", new green spaces with around 100 trees and numerous areas to linger are being created.
On March 12, the City of Vienna began the preparatory work. It is laying around 800 meters of water pipes in order to secure the drinking water supply in the long term. Construction work for the greenery and the new cycle path will then begin, probably in April. During the construction work, traffic will be diverted and some parking spaces will be temporarily closed. Work will also be carried out at night to shorten the construction period.
For the urban climate: new cycle path and green spaces
Wagramer Street is being redivided. In addition to the new cycle path, generous green spaces and new areas to linger will be created. The two lanes in each direction will be retained. A total of 8,100 square meters of new green space will be created. Around 100 additional trees and 60 tall shrubs will be planted. They will provide shade and cooling in the warmer months. Light-colored paving stones will allow rainwater to seep away over a further 8,700 square meters. This will turn the gray Wagramer Strasse into a green and cool oasis.
Water fun in the "street park"
The new "street park" invites you to relax with 55 new trees and numerous seating areas. 35 misting steles, 11 drinking fountains and 6 water features provide refreshment in the hot season. Two of the micro open spaces are additionally shaded and cooled by planted pergolas with built-in misting systems. Sidewalk extensions and raised roadways at intersections without traffic lights increase traffic safety for pedestrians.
With the completion of the mega cycle highway, not only the 1.1 kilometer long cycle path in Wagramer Straße will be created. Surrounding areas and roads will also be better connected to the cycle path network. In total, around 1,500 meters of new, structurally separated cycle paths will improve safety and comfort for cyclists.
Vienna's first mega cycle highway connects Donaustadt with the city on a comfortable and safe route with wide cycle paths throughout. New green spaces are being created, trees planted and areas generously unsealed. The section from the Inner City to Kagraner Platz is expected to be completed by summer 2025.
