New bridge connects Heidelberg
The new pedestrian bridge at Heidelberg Central Station has been open since the beginning of April. This brings the city closer together as a whole, because for the first time in the history of the station there is a direct and barrier-free connection from the city centre to the southern railway town. The 14 metre long and 24 tonne flyover was brought to its current location in eight sections using a mobile crane. With Bergheim on the Neckar behind it, the bridge now runs alongside new buildings such as the Heidelberg Congress Centre to Europaplatz, which the city of Heidelberg is currently in the final stages of transforming into a new urban anchor point. The Gustav Zech Stiftung Management GmbH is supporting the renovation of the neighbouring square. The square is scheduled to open to the public this autumn. Until then, progress can be observed through the covered arcades of the new bridge.
