The mobility transition in Europe is a key lever for climate protection - but how can it succeed? Judith O'Meara, Director of Innovation Hub Central at EIT Urban Mobility, provides insights into the key challenges and opportunities in this interview. She explains how technological innovations, cross-border cooperation and new funding programs such as the Main Innovation Open Call or the RAPTOR program can accelerate change. She also reveals what highlights and impetus polisMOBILITY 2025 has in store for the industry. A conversation about the future of mobility in Europe.

What key challenges and opportunities does the EIT Urban Mobility see for technological innovations in the field of climate protection and the mobility transition in Europe - and which (cross-border) framework conditions could accelerate their implementation?

The mobility transition in Europe is crucial for climate goals but faces challenges such as scaling new technologies, enhancing interoperability, and creating sustainable business models to attract investments. Transitioning to low-emission mobility also requires infrastructure changes, regulatory alignment and user acceptance. However, advancements in electrification, shared mobility, automation and data-driven services offer major opportunities. Digital solutions and mobility-as-a-service platforms enable seamless travel while reducing emissions. Cross-border framework conditions, harmonized regulations, and collaboration between cities, tech providers, and research institutions can accelerate innovation deployment.

Which new or planned funding programs will the EIT Urban Mobility 2025 use to specifically promote technological innovations for climate protection and the mobility transition in Europe?

In 2025, EIT Urban Mobility will continue to offer funding for innovative, climate-friendly mobility solutions through our three key programs. These programs bridge the gap between research and real-world application.

Main Innovation Open Call: Supporting pan-European projects by multidisciplinary consortia to test and validate products in real urban environments, with funding between €250,000 and €1 million for up to 24 months.

SME Market Expansion & RAPTOR Calls: Aimed at SMEs to develop or improve mobility solutions. RAPTOR focuses on fast, innovative solutions for urban challenges, requiring public administration support for up to six months.

Horizon Lab: Helping stakeholders secure additional European funding, e.g. Horizon Europe, Digital Europe, and Connecting Europe Facility, amplifying the impact of mobility projects.

polisMOBILITY offers an intersectoral platform for dialog and innovation. What topics, impulses and highlights do you have in store for visitors this year?

At polisMOBILITY 2025, EIT Urban Mobility will focus on fostering discussions and collaborations around data-driven mobility solutions, sustainable urban transport strategies, and cross-border innovation. A key highlight will be our panel discussion titled "Impact Potentials of European Mobility Data: A Closer Look on Cross-Border Use Cases." This session will address the transformative role of mobility data in shaping sustainable transport systems.

EU policy underscores the importance of mobility data as a driver of innovation, efficiency, and environmental sustainability. However, challenges remain in terms of data accessibility, standardization, and secure exchange mechanisms. Our expert panel will explore best practices in mobility data utilization, particularly from the Benelux region, and assess how these insights could be implemented in German cities to create smarter, more liveable urban environments.
